Activities
Apart from surfing there are a lot of other things to do. In fact we really emphasise our tours are not only about surfing - although thats a big part. You should also be coming as much for the unique culture and environment of the Solomons that we will share with you. Some examples of what our tours get up to:
Rainforest trek and mountain village visit
We take you on a day walk up the mountain where you will see tropical rainforest, subsistence food gardens, ancient nut groves, and small traditional hamlets inhabited by the 'bush' people. The walk is tiring but rewarding with spectacular views of the lagoon and the unexplored surf potential of nearby and distant reefs.
Fishing
If you are interested in fishing you can paddle out in a dugout or we can arrange for you to join with local fishermen in fishing activities ranging from hand lines or trawling from dugouts, deep sea trawling to night diving/spear fishing on reefs. Only very basic fishing gear is available so bring what you need. Fishing tackle/lures etc is a much appreciated gift.
Snorkelling
Solomon Islands is part of the coral triangle - the worlds most biodiverse ocean. While some of the areas are increasingly impacted by subsistence uses we can take you to some beautiful places for snorkelling.
Markets
Colourful markets are important weekly events for the locals. The ancient markets in the open under the trees are an intense and fascinating insight into local life and well worth visiting. Bush people trade with coastal people for cash and barter in a timeless way. The locals will be as interested in you as you are in them.
Village Life
Canoe making, traditional cooking, weaving and crafts, betel nut and lime making, are just some of the things you might see while walking around traditional thatched house villages. We will give you some guided tours but a lot of the interaction is informal and simply joining in the day to day tasks of the village to share and learn.
Waterfall
A not to miss activity from To'ofi Lodge is the short but intense walk up the river to the waterfall. This is a spectacular place and involves trekking through cocoa plantations, some challenging crossings of a pristine mountain river and rainforest.
Cultural activities
At each location we have a range of cultural activities to interact with local people. These include traditional meals prepared by local womens groups, traditional dancing and singing groups and the amazing Bamboo and panpipe bands that this area specialises in. These are not tourist replicas but the real living culture in action. When our tours coincide with local festivals, weddings and rituals we will have the option to join in.
Chill out
The tour can be as relaxed or as active as you want it to be. Its also important to sit back in a hammock and just watch village life roll by, reading or writing as the steamy tropical day ends with a beautiful sunset or spectacular storm. A great way to recover in preparation for the next tide change and back to the reef for more waves or reflect on the amazing experiences of village and tribal life!
